Mrs. Kizer

Saint Madeleine Sophie School

Technology

All about Mrs. Kizer

I have been the technology teacher at Saint Madeleine Sophie School for over 10 years! I entered the field after 16 years experience working for AT&T as an International Marketing, where I was responsible for setting up phone service in third-world countries.

I have always loved technology, and had the thrill of working at the Summer Olympic Games helping the media, coaches and press use the electronic communication system.

I'm a product of over 20 years of a Catholic education (grammar school, high school, college and graduate school) and I am honored to be here at SMS! I hold a B.A. from Regis College, and Master's Degrees from R.P.I, New York University, and the College of St. Rose.

I am a parishioner of St. Madeleine Sophie's, and am married with two children. Our daughter Abby is a proud SMS graduate, and is in the digital media program at Hudson Valley Community College.. Our proud "Eagle Scout" Colin works full-time at FedEx.

About the program

Our new Technology Lab is up and running for another exciting year! We have some new enhancements and exciting plans for the 2011-2012 school year! Come back and visit as the year progresses for updates on what we are learning and exploring!

Curriculum overview

Students in Grades K through 5 attend computer class one period a week.  Students can also come to the lab with their homeroom teacher when technology classes are not in session.  During this time, students can come to the lab under the supervision of the technology teacher to work on specific classroom projects.

In the early primary grades, the emphasis is placed on learning the parts of the compuer, practicing computer operation (on/off), and using software that will enhance reading readiness.  Students will learn basic keyboarding and word processing.

As students progress, emphasis is placed on using technology skills in real-world applications. Students will use the computer to work on interdisciplinary projects.  For example, students recently worked on a Prezi to develop a presentation about the "Heart of Christ" for the Diocesan Convening.  students might use the computer to create a poem or essay and electronically submit it to a writing contest. Or, students may write letters to an elected official concerning an issue that they feel strongly about.

Class activities

Grades K-2 are learning some basic Word skills.  Grades 3-5 are working independently on a basic keyboarding unit using Dance Mat Typing.  Grade 3 will begin developing a powerpoint presentation about themselves for a final class project.  Grade 5 has been busy developing webquests which they will share with Grade 2.  As we progress towards the end of the year, Grades 4 and 5 will be learning some basic animation skills and will create an animated movie.
