Welcome to Miss Barrowman'sFourth Grade Classroom2010 - 2011
Announcements
` Dear Fourth Graders,
Welcome to fourth grade! I am looking forward to having each one of you in my class in September. You will be switching classes and working with different teachers. You’ll get to know the history of New York State, learn all about fractions and decimals, work on four creative book projects, and learn about many more exciting topics! To get our brains ready to begin the year in high gear, there are lots of fun book choices for the summer. In fourth grade, students should be reading an average of 30 minutes a night. Over the summer, at least 20 minutes a day is best. Summer is the best time to get lost in a book and go on adventures of the mind for as long as you want. Try a genre you don’t often choose, like Science Fiction or Biography. Take a blanket outside and explore worlds and ideas you never have before. You must read at least five chapter books this summer. At least three should come from the reading list included with this letter. You may choose your books from any of the sections on the reading list. I know that some people are faster readers than others, and you are most certainly not limited to reading only five books this summer. Every time you finish a book, fill out the next section of the book log. Tip: You could stick your log on the refrigerator so you always know where it is and remember to fill it out as you go. If you read any magazines, you are welcome to include those issues on the log as well, but your log must still include five chapter books. I can’t wait to get to know each of you better and learn about your favorite kinds of books to read. Remember to practice your multiplication facts until you know them like the back of your hand. This will be the best way for you to prepare for fourth grade math.
Have a wonderful, restful, and fascinating summer!
Love,
Miss Barrowman
Summer Reading (please click)
Students must have a supply of pencils, erasers, and looseleaf paper each day.
If you would like to help with other classroom supply items, such as Zip-loc bags, disinfectant wipes, and tissues, that would be great!
Homework
Homework will be given on a daily basis in order to reinforce the concepts introduced each day.
Students will be expected to read an average of 30 minutes throughout the school year. Ideally, students should be reading at least 20 minutes each night. Please be sure your children are keeping track of the books they have read on their reading logs and working on their book projects which are due before the end of every quarter.
Students should review multiplication facts on a nightly basis until mastered and then review facts once a week for continued practice. "Mad Minutes" (timed multiplication and division) quizzes of increasing difficulty will be given on Fridays throughout the year.
Please check your child's planner and homework folder each night for assignments and reminders.
